Gareth Edwards' latest sci-fi blockbuster, The Creator, co-written by Chris Weitz, is making waves for its timely themes on artificial intelligence and its epic visuals. The British filmmaker is known for crafting masterful visuals on a grand scale, from his feature debut Monsters to 2014’s Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Edwards' Star Wars film remains one of the most visually stunning projects from Lucasfilm. With The Creator, Edwards brings an original story to life, creating a visually groundbreaking film in today's Hollywood landscape.

Set in the near future amid a war between the West and A.I., The Creator follows ex-special forces agent Joshua (John David Washington) as he searches for a superweapon that could turn the tide of the war in favor of machines. He must infiltrate "New Asia," where A.I. is still manufactured and robots walk among society. When Joshua discovers that the supposed weapon is a one-of-a-kind simulant child named Alpha-Omega, his allegiances are tested as he learns what it means to be human. Joshua's journey with Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) across New Asia can end the war.

The Lighter, the Better

During a global press conference for The Creator, writer-director Gareth Edwards explained how he made an $80 million blockbuster look like it cost $150-200 million. Cinematographers Greig Fraser and Oren Soffer worked extensively during pre-production, and made sure that the film was planned in advanced so that that team could have a understanding

It's All in the Lighting

Edwards highlighted how the Sony FX3’s high ISO capabilities benefited the production. These new cameras can shoot at 12,800 ISO, allowing filming in moonlight and reducing the need for extensive lighting setups. This higher sensitivity meant fewer lights were needed on set, changing how Edwards staged and directed actors. Quick adjustments allowed for more naturalistic and organic filming, unlike typical blockbusters.

A Better Way of Filmmaking

With faster transitions between scenes, Edwards spent more time with actors, sometimes filming takes as long as 30 minutes. This approach resulted in a naturalistic, organic feel, enhancing the sci-fi elements. In a year of underwhelming blockbusters, The Creator proves that less can be more, showcasing innovation and originality.

Gareth Edwards’ The Creator is poised to be remembered alongside Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 and Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion for its sheer innovation. The film's success demonstrates that grand-scale blockbusters can be made with more modest budgets. Featuring a blend of clean CGI, practical effects, and stunning on-location backdrops, The Creator is a must-see for sci-fi fans.
